DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY TO HIT TUNES... AND LOG AN AEROBIC WORKOUT AT THE SAME TIME!

... we've already been going over a year!

DISCOCISE - THE EXERCISE DISCO

I was halfway through my studies and one night, at a George Michael tribute do (whilst hitting some moves on the dance floor), I had an 'Eureka!' moment! My step counter was logging an aerobic workout... BOOM! Dancing was fun and exercise. That was the birth of 'DISCOCISE'. The exercise class that doesn't feel like exercise! â€‹â€‹

'DISCOCISE - THE EXERCISE DISCO' is a DISCO in your trainers. It is a completely unique concept and unlike any exercise class you'll have been to before. When I gained my fitness qualifications I ripped up the rule book and planned a class that was unlike anything my peers would recognise (but that was still a happy, effective and safe space). Sometimes we complicate fitness with fancy equipment, pain/soreness and ripped bodies. No more... not with Discocise! to stop health being a chore we need to make it fun.

The only choreography you copy are the simple moves in the warm up and the cool down. The middle of the session is a DISCO so freestyle dancing like you might have done on New Years Eve. 

​

The hour long session boasts a megamix of 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s tunes for you to get down and boogie to. You are transported into a world of music, movement, singing and smiling. The beauty is that everyone is so relaxed. You might think you'll feel self conscious but nothing is further from the truth. Within minutes you'll be a part of the community where everyone moves just how they want to. NO ONE worries what they look like. There is no right or wrong. No judgement here... we're all in our dancing zone. It's about having fun and moving your body in a way which is natural and comfortable to you.

The magic is in the music choices. I only play upbeat, positive and popular songs. We have danced to 60's 70's 80's and 90's hits from bands/artists like Wham!, ABBA, Tom Jones, Whitney Houston, The Beatles, Steps, Whigfield, and the Black-eyed Peas. The list could be pages long, though. Feel free to sing-a-long if you know the words. Now and then I do an 'All Request Week', a 'Guest DJ Week' where a discociser chooses the songs and I regularly choose themes to make sure we get a variety of great music to dance to.

If you have been to other music based classes you will generally be expected to copy the instructor at a fast pace. You are unable to choose how you 'feel' with the beat and are so busy trying not to mess it up that you can't enjoy the music. At Discocise you let the music wash over your body and dance how you want. I'm not saying that choreography is a bad thing, it just wasn't for me as it was a bit fast and confusing. I love dancing more. You can clap, sway, side step, wave... do whatever you want (as long as it is safe). It's all your choice.

The scene is set with DISCO lights and all you need to remember is that the more you move the more calories you will burn. â€‹

Anyone... little or large, beginner or advanced can join in the fun. It is a perfect opportunity for all body shapes and sizes to move in a way that is comfortable, beneficial and without comparison to others. No skill is needed. Anyone can move to music in one way or another. 

​

Music, movement and the social setting are great for lifting your mood and it is a lovely, growing community of ladies and gents. It is fun AND friendly. You'll get a very warm welcome from everyone. we all dance together so you won't feel left out. I can introduce you to some lovely people if you are nervous of coming alone.

The sessions can be attended by anyone aged 16+. I purchase my music as music streaming sevices are not licensed for commercial use. I also have the full licences for each session. I have a policy of not publishing videos or photos on social media so you won't have to worry about the world seeing your dance moves. It is better to experience Discocise first hand rather than decide whether or not to join on the basis of a 20 second clip.

The benefits of dancing are huge: dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. Music, movement, singing and socialising are responsible for creating happy hormones which can relieve pain, reduce stress and improve your mood. Even dancing in a group creates joy and is a bonding experience. 

 

Sessions are £6 per person and are on Monday evenings 7pm to 8pm at Richmond Street Community Centre, Richmond Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne OL7 9HG. I take bookings for this class and first timers need to arrive 15 minutes early in order to complete a short health questionnaire beforehand. There is a large car park.

DISCOCISE - THE GOLDEN YEARS

It's time to give back to my local community!

'DISCOCISE - THE GOLDEN YEARS' is a form of DISCOCISE that I bring to the residents in your residential home. It is a 30 minute session with music that your seniors will recognise and enjoy. The opportunity is there to have a dance and/or just singalong. Time for having fun, and bonding together, and time for moving the body a little. The cost is just £27.50 for the session so it will not break the budget. Please contact me if you would like to arrange for me to visit and discuss your requirements.
